Derby No 6 for Brendan

The 99th National Coursing Meeting concluded at Powerstown Park today and it saw Brendan Matthews record a fantastic trainer/breeder treble including his sixth Coursing Derby. It was also a memorable Clonmel for Cork trainer Barry Lynch who was on the podium twice including after the Oaks. And congratulations to Paddy Duffy (Derry) who had both finalists in the Stockproof Fencing TA Morris Stakes with Central Clever declared the winner.

First to Brendan’s treble. Gone To Strand, winner of the 2025 Boylesports Derby for the Limerick Newry Syndicate (Seamus Kelly, Liam Herlihy and Brendan Matthews) who also won the Irish Cup two years ago with Cool Spirit. The Trim qualifier was 20/1 before coursing on Saturday. Navalny, winner of the Callaway Kennels Kevin Smith Champion Stakes for Fintan & John Comerford, Kildare. Well supported before the first round he gives the Comerfords their second Champion Stakes as they won the bitch equivalent with Excelerate back in 2023. Metal Queen, bred & trained & owned by the maestro to win the Classics Club Grace & Matt Bruton Champion Bitch Stakes. It is difficult to believe that it is 17 years since Brendan won the Derby and over 10 since he won either of the Champion Stakes but today was his day once again and it was a wonderful occasion for the Matthews family.

Today was also a dream come true for great friends from England & Scotland, Steve Dobie, Graeme Thompson & Michael Ariss who have been trying to win at Clonmel for a long time and when it finally happened today it happened twice. Making it very special for them was that both winners were trained by Barry Lynch with whom they have soldiered for many many years. Revello Del Toro was involved in the very first course of the meeting and came home first in the Horse & Jockey Hotel Oaks. The Cork (Blarney) qualifier was 25/1 before coursing. The double came courtesy of Orianthi in the Dublin Coach Kitty Butler Stakes.

And so concluded a very enjoyable National Coursing Meeting where I think everyone will agree that the hares were the stars of the show. Congratulations to Team Powerstown, our Judges & Slippers and of course to all our winners. For all the reviews, stories and photos don’t forget to get your Sporting Press this week.

Day 2 at Clonmel

Day 2 of the National Meeting is often described as ‘When the going gets tough and the tough get going’. This year’s renewal certainly echoed those sentiments with the usual mix of polished performances, shock results and fairy-tale journeys continuing to the final day of competition.

The shock withdrawal of Oaks favourite Tory Mischief was the talk of the ring prior to coursing this morning. Gerry Holian’s leading lady had lit up the stretch in the opening round and news of her absence had the bookie’s scrubbing the chalk in ferocious fashion. New favourites were made but in general, the ladies classic has a real ‘open‘ feel about it as we pass the halfway stage.

Tomorrow’s opening quarter final of the Horse & Jockey Hotel Oaks will see Revello Del Toro in red against Unpocoloco. The latter owned by the Collins brothers, Sean & Padraig (Thurles), received a stern test from Lone Blaze in the third round but finished proceedings with a devastating turn of foot on top of the stretch to put the result beyond doubt. However, the Barry Lynch trained Revello Del Toro, will be fancied to prevail having set the standard in the opening quarter in both her courses today. Ballymac Mulan, who shares the head of the market with Eulogy at 2/1, was superb in both her contests today and looks to be made of stern stuff. Her fourth round opponent McCloskey Queen like’s nothing more than upsetting the odds and having claimed the scalp of Moyle Magic in Rd 2; Davy Graham’s lady will hold no fear.

Callaway Red is certainly pleasing the crowds with her devastating turn of foot up the famed hill. The Brendan Matthews & Denis Murphy owned bitch is giving lengths to her rivals over the opening yards but takes flight from halfway. She faces a real speedster in the morning however in Breska Starlight. Young Sam Doolan is getting a real good song from his charge and he will no doubt be hoping that a good start will put her in a good stead to withstand the big finish that her rival will bring. Da Unbelievable came through a titanic battle with NewInn Candy in Rd 3 and Fiona Wilmot won’t want this amazing journey to end just yet. She meets a leading player in Eulogy in the morning. Dan Brassil’s runner needed to be at her best to dismiss Tullamoy Class this evening and a continuation of the form might just give her the edge in this one.

Montpelier Magic was the big name absentee from this morning’s second round of the Boylesports Derby. In the opening quarter, Ballymac Hollow and surprise package Kerry Watch will battle it out for a place in the last four. Ballymac Hollow left it late to finally get the better of Challenger Deep but such was the manner of victory that Liam Dowling’s dog now sits with Cooga Magic on the market lead of 2/1. Kerry Watch has proved the big story of this year’s meeting thus far. 100/1 in the long odds book, the Sean Counihan & Charlie Farrelly owned runner has been a sensation. His early pace is remarkable and claimed his biggest win of the meeting in Rd 3 when beating Ashmore Express. Sparkplug Kerry for James Coss is another outsider who doesn’t read the script and is full value for his place in the last eight. He faces a stiff challenge in the second quarter final in the shape of Gone To Strand. The Newry-Limerick Syndicate owned runner has been going about his business in efficient fashion and will be strongly fancied to progress.

Corn Na Feile winner Five O Five continued his winning sequence and was particularly impressive in Rd 3 when beating Faraway Fields for Dan O’Connor. He takes on the game Ballinabola Cha in the third quarter and the Murphy’s from New Ross will be hoping there’s more to come from their Carlow qualifier. The final of tomorrow morning’s pairings looks the tie of the round. The ultra-consistent Moyle Alonzo extinguished the dreams of A Bitta Luck and this locally owned runner for the ‘Galloping Lads Syndicate’ will certainly proof a tricky opponent for joint favourite Cooga Magic. The latter has being the eye catcher of the field thus far in the Classic but will need to continue that level of performance to assure his place in the last four and keep the dream alive for the ‘Johnny McLoughlin & Cooga Syndicate’.

Day 1 at Clonmel

A great buzz and sense of anticipation greeted followers as they arrived at Powerstown Park this morning and like a typical opening day at Clonmel it was filled with all the mix of emotions possible on such a huge occasion. The coursing was of a very high standard, in particular the morning session, and it augurs well for the remainder of the meeting.

Horse & Jockey Hotel Oaks

The betting ring was very active before coursing and plenty of chalk was being used by the bookmakers especially on Tory Mischief. She went to slips as the 5/2 favourite which is the shortest price ever recorded on the opening day of this classic.

There was a great lull in the crowd as the first pairing of Rathfort Rocket and Revello Del Toro went to slips and soon Brian Doyle had them released and the 99th National Meeting was finally up and running.

Irish Coursing Club President, Pat Loughlin, will have been more than pleased with his syndicate owned First Lady and she qualified smartly for the second round. The first upset of the day came when Lone Blaze beat Hoping For Five but an even bigger shock was to follow when Unpocoloco beat Figjam in a thriller. In between those two buckles Ballymore Lady caught the eye with a very good clock whilst Ballyhealy Twirl unfortunately got extra work in her course and must be a doubtful runner tomorrow.

Ballymac Mulan and My Cool Marie both impressed in the second quarter but the third quarter will take a great deal of winning. Breska Starlight recorded a very fast clock but the performance of Over Excited when changing sides against Orianthi and coming from off the pace to score by a strong two lengths was truly remarkable, this lady doesn’t like to be beaten.

Newinn Candy looked very decent when winning her opening round in the fourth quarter as did Eulogy but this quarter and indeed the first round of the Oaks belonged to the ‘jolly’ Tory Mischief with a 12.48 clock and she is now priced as low as 7/4 with five rounds still to be completed.

Boylesports Derby

The betting ring was again buzzing at the interval and one would need an extra pair of eyes to keep track of the prices changing on the different boards ahead of the Derby. In the top quarter there was good money for Bundchen whilst Ballymac Hollow and Challenger Deep were well supported as was Ashmore Express running for the Derby sponsor. In the second quarter Montpelier Magic was all the rage and Master Tactician attracted some nice bets at a big price. Five O Five and Bobby Browne were the ones the punters latched on to in the third quarter and down in the last quarter the money came for Coverbridge, Central Clever and Cooga Magic.

Ballymac Hollow set the target for the rest of the field in the second course of the opening round before the clash of the two strong fancied runners Bundchen and Challenger Deep gave us an absolute thriller with Challenger Deep doing just enough to earn the flag. Kilkeale Touch then won many admirers putting out Delegator and his meeting with Ashmore Express could be the buckle of Rd2.

The second quarter has several strong contenders and the clash of Gone To Strand and Montpelier Magic is another course to look forward to tomorrow.

Five O Five looked all class when easing into the next round but the 12.34 clock from Joxer in that same quarter caused quite a stir and would prove to be the fastest of the day. Sadly his opponent Ifonlyhedlisten did not finish his course and our hearts went out to Ann Marie & Niamh & John.

In the bottom quarter the ‘With A Bit of Luck’ syndicate from Dundalk were in high spirits when their runner A Bitta Luck upset the fancied Coverbridge, Gunfighter caught the eye and will now meet Escalation which eliminated the well supported Central Clever before Cooga Magic gave an exceptional performance, keeping the dream of his Doon syndicate very much alive.

With the bookmakers still offering 5/1 the field and at least six dogs at that price, this Derby is wide open.

This way to Clonmel

The 99th National Coursing Meeting is an impressive number with one eye already on the big 100 in 12 months’ time. I wonder if those who instigated the first one in 1925 ever dreamt that it would still be going so strong in 2025 with only two years missed due to Foot and Mouth (1968) and Covid (2021).

The utter disappointment in the voices of those connections who had to ring this week to declare their greyhounds as non-runners showed once again what it means to coursing people to drive in the Lodge Gate on the first day of the National Meeting with a Derby or Oaks qualifier (and how hard it is to get there). We were gutted for each and every one of them but I suppose especially for 93 year old John Davern  who was so looking forward to family joining him from overseas to cheer on Conigar Beauty. We hope that she and Rathduff Lyra, Busy Fools, Castlepark Sammy and Ballymac Peaky make it back next year for the Champion Stakes.

Preparing for the draw last Saturday it was very encouraging to see how many owners and syndicates we have with their first ever Clonmel runner. A good few of those Syndicates are made up of young people too and if they can get to the business end of things on Monday it will lead to an incredible atmosphere at Powerstown Park. However all the big guns are in there also and we can look forward to some great David v Goliath battles over the three days. Both Classics look wide open and at this stage it would be impossible to rule out any of the 128 participants.

The weather since Christmas, with heavy snow followed by Storm Eowyn, has really tested Team Powerstown this year but they are a hugely dedicated group and we wish them the very best this weekend. The goal of the hare husbandry team at every club is to get their stock running straight and home safe and it is no different at Clonmel except for the extra pressure of a National Meeting.

For those humming and hawing between the coursing and the Dublin Racing Festival don’t forget we have our on-course betting shop at Powerstown Park and the TVs in the marquee will also be showing the horse racing so you won’t miss a thing. There is brilliant racing at Clonmel Greyhound Stadium on Saturday & Sunday nights also. Saturday nights’ card will feature the two semi-finals of the Rural Kennels Open Unraced and on Sunday night the four finals and four Opens will include the final of the Sporting Press A1/A2 550. Doors open 4pm both evenings and the Ireland v England rugby game will be shown live on the TVs on Saturday evening. Remember too we have live music (and dancing) in our own Club Stand Bar at the racecourse from 3pm to 5pm after coursing on Sunday.

So the waiting is almost over for everyone. Ante-post betting has already been brisk but expect the bookmakers ring to be a hive of activity from 9.00am onwards tomorrow morning. Come early and enjoy a really good breakfast in the Club Stand Restaurant or visit the Trade Stands behind the TA Morris Grandstand. On Monday morning before coursing, in front of stables 54-58, you will be able to view the coursing saplings which are up for auction during the first interval at the TA Morris Grandstand. However most of all it is about renewing old acquaintances, making new ones and enjoying the amazing spectacle and atmosphere of an event that thankfully our predecessors had the foresight to initiate 100 years ago. This way to Clonmel !!!!
