The draw has been made for the 2026 Una O’Sullivan Irish Cup and connections of those drawn in the top half will be counting themselves fortunate to have avoided the red-hot third and fourth quarters. Magical Titan which lost by a nose to eventual winner Seven Barrows in RD3 of the Derby recently will be fancied to progess from the first quarter with Champion Stakes semi-finalist Moyle Alonzo his biggest danger. Champion Stakes winner Five O Five also has a lovely draw in the second quarter although Stickmein, Banoffee Pie and Coverbridge all showed a liking for this field 12 months ago and of course the pup Callaway Pat was a leading Derby fancy earlier this month. Things get much tougher in a third quarter which starts with a pairing of two quarter-finalists from this season’s Derby, Ashmore Mac & Mr Trendsetter. Add in both of last season’s Derby finalists Gone To Strand & Cooga Magic, Irish Cup semi-finalist Challenger Deep, Ballymac Loral which was on the podium at the recent National Meeting and Champion Stakes qualifier Sparkplug Kerry and it really is a bookmakers dream. There is no doubt but 2026 Derby runner-up Ballymac Awil will be a warm order in the fourth and final quarter and he should progress to the last day. However the bottom of that quarter is laden with class, pups and all-ages, and it is possible that Derby semi-finalists from two different seasons, Ballinabola Cha and Mallory Park will be vying for that last place on Sunday’s card.
