Best Of Luck

The very best of luck to connections of the 139 runners who will be heading to Powerstown Park tomorrow morning in search of the ‘Holy Grail’. For some, simply raising a flag to ensure a return trip on Monday will be enough to spark off celebrations in the town’s bars & hotels tomorrow evening. Others will have the bar raised to a Final Day appearance and who knows what may happen then. Of course the ultimate dream for every coursing woman, man & child is to be on that podium on Tuesday afternoon circa 3.30pm. We know the ones that the bookmakers and the shrewd followers of form expect to be accepting the silverware. However in recent years for every Adios Alonso, Thomas The Tank & Graceandglamour that justified favouritism or near favouritism there has also been a Central City, Feel My Pulse & Fortuna that belied their fancy odds when they came to Clonmel.
For the third successive year Abbeyfeale could prove to be the line of form to keep onside. For years regarded as the best forerunner to Clonmel, it lost its significance somewhat for a time. However Derby successes in 2017 & 2018 for Corn Na Feile winners Reikers Island & Silent Whisper have restored its lofty reputation and no less than three winners from their recent meeting, Picture House (Corn Na Feile Derby), Newinn Fifi (Corn Na Feile Oaks) and Boylesportsmagic (Derby TS) are widely touted as possible Clonmel winners. Unfortunately the Abbeyfeale Oaks qualifier Saleen Julie is a non-runner.
2018 was one of those rare years that Gerry Holian left Clonmel empty handed. However the Galway man returns with 13 qualifiers for this year’s Festival. The chances of none can be dismissed but the word on the ground is that Cha Cha Matilda & Elegant Wonder may have the edge. And the Tailteann prefix makes a welcome return to the National Meeting, both in the care of Gerry also. 2018 saw a very first Oaks success for Brendan Matthews and the Newry maestro teams up again with Nora Raleigh in search of an Oaks double. Despite having had to withdraw Needham Ougham yesterday, he remains very much in the contest for a 6th Derby success too with either Huntingtown or Bexhill Liam.
For Liam Dowling it has been a season to remember so far and he heads to Clonmel with no less than six ‘Ballymacs’ (if you count the previously named Ballymac Whisper, now running as Boylesportsmagic). The first name drawn from the hat last Friday night was Ballymac Enya and if she raises the first flag of the meeting it could be the start of a wonderful three days for the Ballymacelligott based family. It could be a wonderful three days also for the many owners and syndicate members who are having their first ever runner at Clonmel. For connections of Slan Abhaile and Tromora Basil their Derby dream only began yesterday when they received the news that they would be coming in from the Reserves bench. A little bit of symmetry in that the Hogans from Quilty in Clare had the first runner into the Oaks when Tromora Bliss qualified in Liscannor and may possibly have the last dog to get into the Derby.
After overnight frost it has been a bright sunny Saturday here in South Tipperary. For fear of ‘putting the mockers on’ we won’t make too many predictions about the weather to come but we are very hopeful that the first brace will go to slips as scheduled at 11am tomorrow morning. Without doubt the newly designed escape and top of field will come in for plenty comment as people start to arrive at the racecourse for Day 1. No decision was taken lightly and many views were listened to, so the wish of every true and genuine coursing enthusiast is surely that those changes will generate the desired result. Here’s to a 94th National Coursing Meeting that will live long in the memory for all the right reasons. #LongLiveCoursing #Clonmel2019

A few things to remember

As excitement mounts ahead of the opening meetings of the 2018/19 Coursing Season we thought we should remind Club Secretaries & Receivers of Entries of a few important rules & directives. Owners and Trainers should also take note.

  1. Every owner must name his greyhound before the time fixed for close of entries (Rule 95).
  2. You may have 2 x Reserves in an 8 Dog Stake, 4 x Reserves in a 16 or 32 Dog Stake and 6 x Reserves in a 64 Dog Stake.
  3. 48 runner trial stakes must now be drawn with 24 runners in each half. At quarter-final stage with six greyhounds remaining, the 3rd greyhound in each half gets a Bye resulting in four dogs remaining on the final day.
  4. No Owner/Partnership/Syndicate may have a runner AND a reserve in the same stake, however they are allowed to have two runners in the same stake (must be guarded in the draw).
  5. If a greyhound appears in the draw for two All Age events which are due to run concurrently it will not be allowed to run in either and shall be penalised for 12 days.
  6. If a greyhound is absent from any stake or withdrawn from any stake it will not be allowed to compete for 12 Days. (Subject to Rule 122).  If such authorisation is not granted and the greyhound competes,  it shall be disqualified and forfeit all trophies & prizemoney won. As a rule of thumb we count the final day of the meeting where it was absent/withdrawn as Day 1 of the 12.
  7. Directive No 16 covers Prizemoney Ratios in All Age Cup and All Age Bitch events. In a 32 Cup the ratio is 10:3:1 so for every ten units to the Winner, the Runner-Up must receive at least three units and the beaten semi-finalists at least one unit each (E.G Winner €1800 – RunnerUp €540 – Semi-Finalists €180 each).  In a 16 Cup the ratio is 10:3 so for every ten units to the Winner, the Runner-Up must receive at least three units (E.G Winner €1,400 – RunnerUp €420).
  8. Winner’s prizemoney for All Age Cups and All Age Bitch Stakes cannot be changed from that which appeared in the Sporting Press prior to the draw.
  9. The Entry Fee for ALL 32/48/64 runner trial stakes is now €50.  Winner to receive €1.500 (32) or €2,000 (48/64).  There is no change to 16 runner trial stakes which will continue to have an Entry Fee of €40 and winner’s prize of €600.

2018 Hare Seminar

A huge thank you to our guest speakers and to the 134 delegates from over 60 clubs who attended the 2018 Hare Husbandry Seminar at Powerstown Park, Clonmel last Saturday, September 8th.

We know that hare husbandry is top priority with all coursing clubs and we hope that Saturday’s event was of benefit to those who travelled from near & far.

Gerry is the new ICC President

A proud moment for Gerry Meehan (centre), Club Rep for Millstreet CC and a native of Co Clare as he receives the chain of office from retiring ICC President, Brian Divilly, (Galway & Oranmore CC), at the AGM of the Irish Coursing Club on Wednesday 8th August.
Brian had been President since 2008 making him the longest serving President in the 102 year history of the Club. Many tributes were paid to Brian and he in turn wished his successor every success. On left is DJ Histon CEO and remarkably Gerry will only be the second President that DJ has worked with since taking up his position at Davis Road in the autumn of 2008.

National Meeting 2019

The Executive Committee of the Irish Coursing Club have announced that the 2019 National Coursing Meeting will take place in Clonmel from Sunday February 3rd to Tuesday February 5th.
This will be the 94th National Meeting.

Testing Notice

All samples taken at the National Meeting and Irish Cup meeting 2018 are reported negative.

This concludes testing for the 2017/18 coursing season.

Thanks to all owners and trainers for their full co-operation.

Fantasy – A three way divide

For the first time in the 24 year history of our Sporting Press Fantasy Coursing competition we had three selections equal on points (805) on top of the leaderboard at the finish. Technically that is the case but the Roll of Honour will only show two names because Michael McMahon from Ballybunion is in the fortunate position of being in there twice. In recent seasons Michael often got a mention for being on top or near the top of the leaderboard but we think this is the first time that he has collected a prize. The total prizemoney fund was €7,000 (€5,000 – €1,500 – €500) so Michael will receive 2/3 of this amount which equates to €4,700. The other 1/3 €2,350 goes to a young man who was on the podium back in 2009, Ian Bourke from Oola. Since then we have often engaged Ian to give us his National Meeting & Irish Cup predictions for the Sporting Press and he is never too far away. Michael & Ian will now be invited to the Irish Coursing Club Awards in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Limerick on April 14th to accept their cheques.
As has occasionally happened in the past there was little or no movement on the Fantasy leaderboard at the Irish Cup meeting. Two pups made it into the final of the Irish Cup itself and another pup won the Patsy Byrne Select Bitch Stake. The only worry Michael & Ian had was that Jamess Treasure might win as that would have a massive result for Stephen Gollogly, Armagh on 720 points. How often must Stephen have watched the re-run of that exciting semi-final between Watchman & Jamess Treasure. A good few near the top of the leaderboard had Jamaica Judy but for most of them she was the one which wasn’t counting (only seven of the eight selections count) as the 2017 Oaks semi-finalist had no points going to Limerick. Therefore even if she had won the final against Mad Decision it wouldn’t have had a major effect on the result.
There was another very close finish to our Fantasy Coursing for Charity competition with Co Carlow coursing club’s Caoimhe Cullen (630 points) just hanging on to victory by 10 points over Shane Curtin (Abbeyfeale) and Mary Guiney (Rathkeale). We will be presenting Caoimhe with a cheque for €1,000 to give to her chosen charity at the ICC Awards. Our sincere thanks to an anonymous sponsor for this lovely prize which is always much appreciated by the winner. Caoimhe was still unsure of her victory heading to Limerick racecourse on the Sunday as Grainne Herbert (Kilflynn) with 580 points still had two selections, Ashmore Rocket & Dromtullabeg, running extremely well in the Irish Cup. However by the first interval we knew our winner. Many thanks to all those who agreed to participate in the separate ‘charity’ competition this season.
Our photo shows Dicks Bimbo which amassed 190 Fantasy Points followed by Kyle Mozart on 170.

Gerry wins Clonmel Tipster prize
We had a seven way tie on 40 points in our ICC website Clonmel Tipster competition.
All seven names went into a hat and in the bookmakers ring during the second interval on the final day of the Irish Cup we asked Sarah Jane Doyle from Ennis to pick out a winner.
The name drawn was Gerry Meehan from Kiskeam, Co Cork.
Gerry was thrilled to hear he had won and opted for the prize of a 12 month subscription to the Sporting Press.
For the record his selections for Clonmel were: Silent Whisper – Silent Wonder- Kyle Mozart – Bexhill Anna
A big thank you to all who participated.
