Irish Cup Rose 1a

Oola Prince which was due to meet last year’s Irish Plate winner For The Parish in the first round of the 2018 Irish Cup tomorrow has been declared a non-runner. This brings to three the number of official absentees as Needham Yippee and Ashmore Derby were already withdrawn. We also understand that Res A Patterdale Iarla will not be available to fill one of those places. In the Patsy Byrne Select All Age Bitch Stake the only official non-runner is Some Tonic.

Make sure to read this week’s Sporting Press before heading to Patrickswell on Friday morning for the opening day of the 2018 Irish Cup meeting. Not surprisingly the three classic winners Skellig Shane, Reikers Island & Kyle Mozart figure prominently in the selections of those invited to give their prediction but Ashmore Rocket, Half The Odds, Jamess Treasure, Ballinveala Yolo, Domain King, Barefoot Marine, Roskeen Colonel, Longway Home, Ham And Inch, Shanballa Joe and the pups Roquefort Teddy, You Amaze Me, Watchman, Kyle Vivaldi & Ashmore Derby all get at least one vote to lift Ireland’s oldest coursing classic. The Patsy Byrne Select Bitch Stake will also be a hugely competitive event and here our experts plump for 2017 Champion Bitch Stake winner Killucan Rose as well as Derramore Chick, Finn Dancer, Gadget Eoin, Win Or Else & Jamaica Judy with nobody giving a squeak to any of the eleven pups which is interesting. (By the way we had a seven way tie on 40 points for the ICC website National Meeting Tipster Competition. Brendan Fealy, Gene Fitzgibbon, Ger Manley, Liam Farrell, Patrick O’Donovan, Gerry Meehan & Jason O’Dwyer. A draw will take place in the bookmakers ring during the second interval next Sunday to decide who wins the prize).

Damien Lonergan of BoyleSports reports that they have now slashed Post Graduate to 10/1 also following sustained interest at 14s and 12s. In the last 24 hours they have also noticed good money coming for Rosskeen Colonel & Jamess Treasure in the Irish Cup and Darling Daughter in the Patsy Byrne Select Bitch Stake.
BoyleSports & Bet Browne have released their prices for the 2018 Irish Cup and it is certainly worth looking at both websites before you place your bet. They agree on the favourite, 2017 Derby divider Reikers Island, but BoyleSports currently offer the best price of 7/1. BoyleSports also offer the better odds of 9/1 on 2017 winner Skellig Shane and Berkie is taking no chances with Post Graduate which he has priced at only 10s (14s with BoyleSports).  Both firms offer 8/1 for the pups Roquefort Teddy & Watchman and also 10/1 for recent Kevin Smith Champion Stakes winner Kyle Mozart.
If you fancy a flutter on the pup You Amaze Me or on Slaney Cup winner Jamess Treasure then Bet Browne have the best value at 12/1 and 16/1 respectively. Ballinveala Yolo which meets Skellig Shane in the first round is also better priced with Bet Browne at 16/1 (14s with BoyleSports).
Looking through the prices in general one is surprised at how short some runners are and vice versa. The ‘shorter priced than expected’ ones are Wheres Mr Wilks (12/1), Ham And Inch (14/1), Kilkeale Magic (20/1). In contrast Rosskeen Colonel at 25s, Wi Can Riki, Ballarue Kyle & Chooseyourweapon at 33s and Set Sail at 40s look like good value for those who like a small punt at a big price.
